CITATION: Green, Amanda Jackson. Hidden Black History: From Juneteenth to Redlining. Lerner, 2021.
This nonfiction book starts with the premise that systemic racism has hurt black people throughout America’s history, going all the way back to 1619 when the slave ship The White Lion arrived in Virginia. In a relatively short space, it covers slavery, Jim Crow, Junteenth, The Civil Right’s Movement, redlining, George Floyd, and Black Lives Matter. The book ends with a timeline of Black history as well as an appendix. Reflection questions like “Have you ever felt like your voice wasn’t being heard?” are embedded in yellow boxes throughout the book.
